Prof. Alessandro Volterra, Senior Researcher

He is Associate Professor of History of African Institutions at the Department of Political Science, Roma Tre University. He was several times Visiting Scholar in Eritrea and Somalia and is member of the Scientific Committee of Journal of Eritrean Studies and of Studi Somali. He is founding member of the Italian Association for African Studies and Director of the Interdepartmental Centre of Somalian Studies. He published over 40 articles and books with leading international journals and publishers on the topics of African history, decolonization processes and the political struggles for independence.

Albertina Nania, Junior researcher

BA in History of Economic Thought, MS in Theories and History of International Political Economy, and PhD Candidate in Political Science and International Relations with a specific skill on the International Monetary System. She has published several research papers on European and international monetary issues and is Project Officer for the CIDRA Project.

Dr. Francesca Berti, Junior researcher

MA in Economics (LUISS University), MS in Theories and History of International Political Economy (Roma Tre)and PhD in Economics (University of Ancona), her research is mainly focused on the economics of innovation and local industrial districts. Since 2021, she is research assistant of International Political Economy at the Department of Political Science, Roma Tre University. She is Project Officer for the Erasmus+ Network ‘EUPress’, 2022-25

Veronica Sacco, Junior researcher

BA in International Cooperation, MS in International Relations and International History and Policy, she is Research Assistant in Theories and History of International Political Economy. She worked for the Italian Embassy in Riga (Latvia). In 2018-19 she worked for the Norwegian-Italian Chamber of Commerce and in 2022 for the Institute for Foreign Trade in Italy. She is Editorial Assistant for Euractiv Italia and Project Officer for the Erasmus+ Teacher’s Training ‘EUTeach’, 2022-25.

Prof. Lina Papadopoulou, Senior researcher

Triantafyllia (Lina) Papadopoulou is Professor of Constitutional Law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece, holder of a Jean Monnet Chair for European Constitutional Law and Culture, and Academic Coordinator of the AUTh Jean Monnet Centre
of Excellence on “European Constitutionalism and Religion(s)” (2018-21). Her main teaching at the Law School includes Constitutional Law and European Human Rights Law and Gender issues. She also teaches at the Master programs “Bioethics and Medical Law” and “Religion, Geopolitics and International Security”. Lina studied Law at AUTh (Bachelor 1993), Trier (LLM 1994) and Hannover (PhD 1998) as well as Political Theory at the London School of Economics (LSE, MSc 1999). She was a Post-doc ‘Marie Curie’ Fellow in the field of European Constitutional Law at the LSE (2000 and 2001) and AUTh (2001/02). Her primary areas of expertise include national, comparative, and European constitutional issues and human rights, focusing on democracy and political parties, economy and the constitution, equality and non-discrimination, religion and the state, and bioethical issues. Her publications include monographs, handbooks as well as approx. 100 articles in Greek, English and German.

Dr. George Andreou, Senior researcher

George Andreou is Associate Professor in the School of Political Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He studied political science and international relations at the University of Athens and at the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium) and received his PhD in political science and public administration from the University of Athens (2001). He has also taught at the University of Athens, the University of Crete, the University of the Peloponnese and the National School of Public Administration (Greece). His research interests include public policy analysis, the policies of the European Union and cohesion policy (regional/structural policy) in particular, the Europeanisation of public policies in the EU and the relations between Greece and the EU.

He has published European governance at a time of multiple crises (Kritiki, Athens 2022), The new institutionalist aporach of politics (Kritiki, Athens 2018), The New Cohesion Policy of the EU and Greece with P. Liargovas (Papazisis, Athens 2007) and various articles in Greek and international academic journals; he has also contributed to several collective volumes (in Greek and English). He also edited the special issue of the Greek Political Science Review, Institutions, Public policies and Reforms in Greece (vol. 40, July 2013) and co-edited the book Cohesion Policy and Multi-level Governance in South East Europe (Routledge, Οxon 2011).

Silia Gounari, Administrative Assistance

Vasiliki Gounari is a graduate of the Law School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds two master’s degrees, in Art, Law & Economy and in History, Philosophy and Sociology of Law. Since 2017, she has been active in the field of project management and research in European and national programmes, focusing on areas such as restorative justice, democracy and electoral campaigns on social media, European–African cooperation, and the functioning of the European Arrest Warrant. She has experience in the project and financial management of Erasmus+, Horizon, ESIF (NSRF), and territorial cooperation programmes (e.g. Re-Justice, ASSETS, DG-Just), combining a strong academic background with practical expertise in the implementation of complex projects.

Dr. Eytichia Teperoglou, Senior researcher

Eftychia Teperoglou is an assistant professor at the Department of Political Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, specializing in Political and Electoral Sociology. She studied Political Science and History at Panteion University and completed her PhD thesis at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Athens. From 2009 to 2014 she held a research position at the Centre for European Social Research (MZES) at the University of Mannheim, Germany, and for three years she conducted postdoctoral research at the Centre for Sociological Studies and Research of the University Institute of Lisbon (CIES-IUL). She has also worked for several years in research projects at the National Centre for Social Research (NCSR). She represents Greece in the most important European and global research networks for the study of elections and political elites. Her research interests focus on electoral and political behaviour, comparative political analysis, political representation, Euroscepticism and research methodology. Her main publications include the monograph The other ‘national’ elections. Analyzing the European Elections in Greece 1981-2014 (Papazisis, International and European Politics series, Athens 2016) and the editing (with Hermann Schmitt) of the edited volume The 2014 European Parliament Elections in Southern Europe: still Second Order or Critical Contests?, South European Society and Politics series, Routledge, 2016. Her studies have been published in international journals and edited volumes. Since October 2022 she is the scientific coordinator of the Erasmus Module on “The transformative impact of EU integration in Southern Europe: electoral politics, institutions and society” (EUPolSur). Since March 2022 she coordinates the Greek part of the European Horizon project “Towards a new era of representative democracy – Activating European citizens’ trust in times of crises and polarization” (ActEU).

 

Antonios Parasoglou, Technical Support

Antonios Parasoglou is a Political Scientist. He graduated in 2021 from the Department of Political Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, while he is currently completing his Master’s degree in the field of Governance and Regional Development at the same department. He has been working in the field of merchant shipping since 2023, while since the same year he has been supporting administratively and scientifically the Joint English-speaking Master Program “European Studies” (Double Degree Master Program) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in cooperation with the University of Turin. He is a founding member of the Municipal Youth Council of Thessaloniki and its Treasurer for the years 2020-2021, with significant activity in the local communities of the city. He currently holds the position of General Secretary of the Alumni Association of the Thessaloniki Municipal Youth Council.

Dr. Nikolaos Gaitenidis, Junior researcher

MA in International Legal Studies, PhD in International and European Studies, he was research assistant to the Jean Monnet Chair on New Dimensions for EU legal Studies at the University of Macedonia, Research Fellow of the Kalliopi Koufa Foundation and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, External expert for the Ministry of Justice, Evaluator for the European Commission, and is currently Lecturer on contract for many Greek Universities. He is also Researcher for the Labor Institute of GSEE.

Pr. Kartobi Salah Eddine
Dr. Brahim Elafqih, Senior researcher

Head of the International Cooperation and Partnership Division at Cadi Ayyad University. He holds a Diploma of Advanced Higher Studies in management and is currently preparing a doctoral thesis in management sciences. He has fifteen years of experience in the most active Moroccan university in the field of international cooperation. Particularly familiar with the higher education system at national and international level, and having a good knowledge of the functioning of the university and its bodies, of international and intercultural contexts thanks to its participation in various national and international cooperation programs. He is a member of the university strategy development committee for 2013- 2016, 2016-2019-2021-2024. Member of the University’s Quality Management System Implementation Working Group and Internal Auditor of the University’s Quality Management System.

Prof. Dr. Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed, Senior Researcher

Mohamed Mohamud has been an integral member of SIMAD University since 2004, where he currently serves as the Deputy Rector of Academics. In this role, he oversees academic activities, policies, and strategic initiatives to align the university with international standards and market demands. Previously, he held other roles including Deputy Rector of Institutional Development and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, contributing significantly to curriculum development, institutional planning, and fostering industry partnerships. As a PhD in Peace, Governance, and Development, Mohamed combines his academic expertise with hands-on leadership and good governance in higher education. He holds an MSc in Telecommunications Engineering and a degree in Information Technology. His research interests span ICT adoption in education, e-governance, and public procurement systems.

Najibullah Nor Isak, Senior Researcher

Najibullah Nor Isak is a senior researcher at SIMAD University. He has extensive experience of economic policy making particularly in the fiscal policy, taxation and regional integration. Starting his civil service career in 2014 at the Ministry of Finance of Somalia, Mr. Isak served in different capacities from junior economist to senior economist and Division Chair in Tax Policy. He has also worked for the World Bank as a VSP fellow, where his primary assignments were evaluating the macroeconomy and country programs of Ethiopia and Somalia. Mr. Isak is a researcher and publishes in tax, fiscal policy and political economy. He was a contract-based researcher at the UK’s Institute of Development Studies contributing research studies at the Center for Tax and Development, ICTD. Najibullah has obtained an MA in Public Finance from National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies GRIPS in Japan and BA in Economics from SIMAD University in Somalia. He has completed non-degree courses at IMF Institute for Capacity Development in the USA and AfDB’s African Development Institute in Côte d’Ivoire.

Mr. Abdulwahab Osman Sheikhdon, Junior Researcher

Abduwahab Osman Sheikhdon has been an essential part of SIMAD University since 2018, where he served as an Officer at the Research & Development Center from 2022 to 2024. In this role, he managed university research grants, coordinated academic conferences, and optimized the research repository, fostering scholarly contributions both locally and globally. Professionally, Abduwahab also excelled as a Software Developer, designing user-friendly applications, conducting software testing, and collaborating with teams to deliver impactful projects. Currently pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science and Technology at Central South University in Hunan, China.Abduwahab holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from SIMAD University (2018–2022), graduating with distinction. His expertise spans AI modeling, data analytics, and machine learning, with notable achievements like developing SIMAD’s research repository and a QR-code-based attendance system. Abduwahab is dedicated to advancing technology-driven innovation and societal development through research and practical solutions.

Bile Yusuf Abukar, Junior Researcher

Mr. Bile Yusuf Abukar is currently the head of the department of Research and Publications at the Center for research and development of SIMAD University. Mr. Bile is also one of the members of the faculty of Economics, and he teaches Inferential Statistics, Econometrics, Time Series Analysis, and Mathematics for Economics. Furthermore, Mr. Bile has a research interest in the fields of education, climate-change, poverty, and income inequality. On the other hand, Mr. Bile obtained his Master’s degree in Economics in 2022, and his bachelor degree in Statistics and Planning in 2018 from the International University of Japan (IUJ), and SIMAD University in Somalia respectively.

Mr. Adan Ahmed Bulale, Senior Researcher

Adan Ahmed Bulale is an experienced researcher, consultant, and academic specializing in governance, public administration, and sustainable development. He serves as the Head of the Research Department at SIMAD University, where he is responsible for organizing industry trainings, developing proposals for tenders, and managing grants. As a consultant, he has extensive experience in training enumerators, supervising data collection, interpreting interviews, writing reports, ensuring research ethics, and maintaining quality control. In addition to his research and consultancy roles, he lectures in Comparative Public Administration, with expertise in privatization, governance systems, new public management, rent-seeking, patrimonialism, bureaucracy, and clientelism. His published research covers a broad range of topics, including corruption, service delivery, state absence, state failure, the informal economy, microfinance, transitional economies, and cooperatives. His work contributes to policy development and academic discourse on governance, economic resilience, and institutional reforms.

Mustafa Haji, Senior Researcher

Mustafa Haji is a seasoned finance professional with over ten years of experience in financial management, strategic planning, and institutional growth. Currently, he serves as the Finance Director at SIMAD University in Mogadishu, where he has been instrumental since November 2020 in overseeing financial operations, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring fiscal sustainability. His career at SIMAD University began as an Accountant from December 2015 to September 2018, followed by a brief stint as Finance Coordinator from August to October 2020. Mustafa’s expertise spans financial analysis, budget management, and economic research, with a particular focus on Development and Environmental Economics.

Rector of the Official University of Bukavu, Charles Kahindo Muzusa Ngabo, Senior researcher

Current Rector of the Official University of Bukavu, senior lecturer and scientist affiliated with the same university for about twenty years. Trained as ecologist with MSc in Environmental Management and a PhD in Conservation Biology from Makerere University (Uganda). In the past, Charles has held the position of Acting Country Director and Technical Director of the international NGO Conservation International (CI) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Prior to joining CI, Charles held also the position of Project Manager at WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature) in Uvira, Eastern DRC, where his main role was to manage and implement the Democratic Republic of Congo component of the United Nations Development Programme’s transboundary project for the sustainable management of the Lake Tanganyika watershed. Co-author of many peer-reviewedpapersin the fields of animal ecology, climate change and conservation biology.

Prof. Pacifique Makuta Mwambusa, Senior Researcher

Doctor in Political and Administrative Sciences from the University of Kisangani and Professor of political science at the Official University of Bukavu, Visiting Professor at Congolese and Burundian universities. Director of Research and Co-founding member of Research Initiatives for Social Development (RISD). Teacher, Consultant and Researcher whose work and publications focus on: Elections, Governance, Gender, Democracy, Political and institutional reforms, Citizenship, Conflicts, construction and consolidation of Peace. His research and publications also focus on identity conflicts, social movements, armed conflicts and political violence. Currently Dean of the Field of Legal, Political and Administrative Sciences at the Official University of Bukavu in DR Congo.

Dr. Joseph Munyabeni Nyembo, Junior researcher

Joseph Munyabeni Nyembo holds a PhD in Political and Administrative Sciences from the University of Kisangani (DRC). His research focuses on decentralisation, democracy, development, Public Governance and participatory budget. He has served as a major and
deputy of Kadutu commune in Bukavu district for about 14 years. He is an associate Professor at the Faculty of Social, Political and Administrative Sciences of the UOB.

Dr. Ephrem Akilimali Ndatabaye, Junior researcher

Ephrem Akilimali Ndatabaye holds a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship from Makerere University (Kampala). He is currently completing a PhD in Business Management from the Graduate School of Business Administration of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His research focuses on Entrepreneurship, Organisational Behaviours with a specific interest in Human Resource Management and Career Development. He has worked with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), and the Agribusiness Alliance on several projects to engage youths in Agribusiness in South-Kivu, his home district. He has received research awards and fellowships both at national and international levels. In his job of junior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Management of the UOB, he has successfully supervised students in developing their theses. Some of the topics addressed include barriers to Female entrepreneurship, the relationship between Education and Poverty, Human Development Index gain of eliminating the gender gap in Entrepreneurship and in Education, the relationship between digital competitiveness and entrepreneurial activity level of countries, Human Resource Management best practices, and the effects of Democracy, Religiosity and Charity on Entrepreneurship.

Prof. Ricardo Palomo, Senior researcher

Ricardo Palomo is a Professor of Financial Economics and the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at CEU San Pablo University. He also serves as the Rector’s Delegate for Digital Transformation and is the Director of CEU Digital at the San Pablo CEU Foundation since 2020. Prof. Palomo co-directs the CEU Blockchain & DLT Lab and the Metaverse R&D Community Lab (CEU-ACM).
He has held prominent positions such as Director of the José Barea Chair at the Institute of Fiscal Studies (2013-2021) and a board member of the HAZ Alliance for Education since 2021. Prof. Palomo actively contributes to various research and technology transfer initiatives, including his work with ALASTRIA, the National Blockchain Ecosystem. His academic and professional expertise focuses on digital transformation, financial innovation, and blockchain technologies

Dr. Javier Porras, Junior researcher

He is PhD in European Studies (international and cum laude mentions) as a PhD scholarship holder. He has graduated in EU Law by CEU San Pablo University, with specialized studies in European Law completed at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany). He is a specialist in European and Spanish Competition Law from the Institute of Stock Market Studies (IEB)- UCM and a Master’s Degree in European Union from the Royal University Institute of European Studies at CEU San Pablo and the Ortega y Gasset University Institute. Likewise, he has completed his training with various courses in management of public services (Fondazione per l’Ambiente – Turin), Civil Mediation and Contracting (Law Society of Ireland) and research courses in Law as a visiting doctoral student at the European University Institute of Florence. He is currently Senior Lecturer of European Union Law and EU Institutions, Competition Law, Internal Market and EU Freedoms, European and International Procedural Law and International Public Law and International Relations at the CEU San Pablo University, as well as a researcher and professor at the Royal University Institute of European Studies of the aforementioned university. Since 2021, he has been coordinator of the IBP UNITAR-CEU with  the United Nations and has been Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Law and member of the dean’s team (2018-2020). Javier has collaborated on projects for the Ibero- American Investment Bank for the Government of Panama, on projects of the European Commission on European Union-China relations and with the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness on Competition Law and Energy Taxation. He is Secretary General of the European Law Moot Court Society and member of the board of directors of the Spanish Association for the Study of European Union Law (AEDEUR).

Prof. Belén Becerril, Senior researcher

Belén Becerril is an Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at CEU San Pablo University. She earned her PhD in Law (European Doctorate Thesis Award, Community of Madrid) and holds a Diplôme d’Études Spécialisées en Droit International et Européen from Université Catholique de Louvain with high distinction.

Dr. Allan Francis Tatham, Senior researcher

Dr. Allan Tatham is a barrister and expert in EU law with over 25 years of lecturing experience, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. He served as a legal advisor at the European Commission Delegation to Hungary during the EU accession process.
He has been a lecturer at CEU San Pablo University since 2011, focusing on EU law, international law, and international relations. His research explores international and regional courts. Dr. Tatham has a Doctorate in Law from the University of Leiden, with extensive academic contributions on EU enlargement and law harmonization.

Prof. José María Larrú, Senior researcher

José María Larrú is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at CEU San Pablo University since 1996. He holds a PhD in Economics and Business Studies and an MA in Theology from CEU San Pablo University. His teaching and research focus on world economy, international markets, and development cooperation.
His recent publications address multidimensional poverty, foreign aid, and the intersection of economics with global development goals. Prof. Larrú has contributed significantly to academic and policy research on international cooperation and humanitarian aid.

Prof. Assefa Fiseha, Senior researcher

Assefa Fiseha (PhD, Professor) is a leading expert in comparative federalism, Political transition and devolution in Africa, and has been engaged in teaching and research in higher education since 1996. He has published two books, numerous articles and book chapters covering broad range of issues: Federalism and Devolution in Africa, Managing Cleavages in Deeply divided Societies, intergovernmental systems, constitutional reforms, democratization, local governments, minority rights and the justice sector. He has been engaged in constitution making processes and dialogues in several countries (Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, and Malawi). He has worked in joint research and training projects run by the Max Planck Institute (Heidelberg Germany), European Institute of Peace, the Forum of Federations (an international network of experts in Federalism based in Canada), Berghof Foundation (Germany), InterAfrica Group (Ethiopia) and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) among others. Previously, he has served as Dean of the Faculty of Law and designed MA/LL.M and PhD programs run by Addis Ababa University. He has served as a lead research team in different research projects both at Addis Ababa University and other partner research institutions. He was a fellow at the Institute for Social Study (Princeton, New Jersey- 2023) and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Germany). His most recent book includesFederalism Devolution and Cleavages in Africa (Cham: Palgrave, Macmillan 2024)

Dr. Sisay Kinfe, Junior researcher

Sisay Kinfe (PhD) is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Federalism and Governance Studies, College of Law and Governance Studies, Addis Ababa University. She received MA and PhD degrees in federalism and Governance both from Addis Ababa University in 2010 and 2018, respectively. Sisay took Bachelor Degree in History from Dilla University in 2004. Here research areas include: federalism, gender, women’s right, human rights, family law, customary justice, local governance, and ethno-cultural diversity.

Prof. Solomon Nigussie,Senior researcher

Solomon Negussie, (PhD,Utrecht University) is an Associate Professor and former dean of the College of Law and Governance Studies, Addis Ababa University.His area of research focuses on decentralization, comparative constitutional federalism, law and development, and human rights. He serves as a senior resource person in decentralization and governance and widely published in the areas of constitutional law, fiscal federalism, and human rights. He has participated in many national and international academic conferences. Besides research teaching and supervising masters and PhD students, Dr. Solomon provides consultancy services to governmental organizations and civil societies. Currently, he is serving as senior legal advisor for Ethiopian civil society organizations council. He also serves as a board chair of a local CSO working on promoting dialogue, peace and conflict transformation in Ethiopia.

Dr. Sisay Mengistie, Junior researcher

Sisay Mengistie (PhD) is an assistant Professor at the Center for Federalism and Governance Studies, Addis Ababa University. He took LLB Degree in Law from Ethiopian Civil Service College in 2004. He received LL.M and PhD degrees in Human Rights in 2010 and 2018, both from Addis Ababa University, respectively. He also holds MA Degree in Federalism and Local Governmentfrom Ethiopian Civil Service College. He was a guest researcher at the Institute of Federalism and regionalism of Eurac research Bolzano, Italy and University of Graz, Austria. He has published peer reviewed articles and book chapters in in reputable journals. He was also awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship on the ‘Local Government and the Changing Urban-Rural Interplay (LoGov)’ project in 2022, hosted by Institute of Federalism of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. His research areas include human and minority rights, local government, state constitutions and federalism.

Dr. Ketema Wakjira Debela, Junior researcher

Ketema Wakjira Debela (PhD) is the Current Director of and an Assistant Professor at the Center for Federalism and Governance Studiesof Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He obtained PhD degree in Federalism and Governance from Addis Ababa University.  Ketema also holds a post graduate Diploma in Federalism, Decentralization and Conflict Resolution from University of Fribourg, Switzerland.Dr. Ketema holds African Peacebuilding Network (APN) Individual Research Fellow of 2022. He was also awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship on the ‘Local Government and the Changing Urban-Rural Interplay (LoGov) project in 2019 and 2024. He has published articles and book chapters in areas of federalism, intergovernmental relations, institutional federal design, democratization, conflict resolution, internal displacement, urban local governance, urbanization and interdisciplinary learning approaches.He has been actively engaged in different thematic and consultative research projects in his areas of research and teaching interests. 

Dr. Mohammed Dejen Assen, Junior researcher

Dr. Mohammed DejenAssen is an Assistant Professorof Federalism and Governance Studies at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia). He obtained BA in History, LLB in Law, MA and PhD in Federalism and Governance Studies from Addis Ababa University. His research interests include; the interaction between law and religion, religion and human rights, federalism, minority rights, secularism, politics and governance in Africa, ethnicity and identity politics in Ethiopia, migration and youth mobility, regional cooperation and integration, state-building etc. He has published several journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Dejenserved as a consultant for government institutions and international organizations on diverse issues. He has received awards and grants from different national and international organizations. 

Dr. Rasul Ahmed Minja, Senior researcher

Dr. Rasul A. Minja is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). Dr. Minja has a Ph.D. in political science from the Institute for Political Science of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. His main research interests include regional integration, legitimacy issues related to natural resource extraction and management, Tanzania’s foreign policy and election management. He has published works on the following themes: regional integration, community policing; election management; the Tanzania Union, East African Community (EAC) federation, and local government elections

Prof. Domenico Fiormonte, Senior researcher

PhD University of Edinburgh, he is Associate Professor of Comparative Literatures at the Department of Humanities, University of Roma Tre. His research focuses on global digital humanities, geopolitics of knowledge and the decolonization of digital media. With Sukanta Chaudhuri and Paola Ricaurte he has edited the Global Debates in the Digital Humanities (Minnesota University Press, 2022). He is currently Research Associate at the University of Dar es Salam, Tanzania.

Dr. Masoud Dauda, Senior researcher

Masoud Dauda is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Dar es Salaam. He teaches Anthropology and Sociology. He holds a PhD from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, a Master’s degree from Lund University, Sweden and a BA degree in Sociology/Anthropology from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His academic background reflects an interest in understanding the relationship between humans and their environment from a range of perspectives. His research interests cut across topics such as social change and culture, sociology of development, human ecology, environment and development, environmental health, gender issues, energy studies, biodiversity management, community-based conservation, sustainability, climate change, renewable energy innovations and innovation systems. He has supervised 11 master’s degree students as well as 1 PhD student.

Dr. Evans F. Wema, Senior researcher

Evans F. Wema is a Senior Lecturer in Information Management and IT at the Information Studies Programme, University of Dar es Salaam. He holds a PhD in Information Management & IT from the Loughborough University, United Kingdom, Master’s degree in Information Studies from University of Dar es Salaam Tanzania and Master’s in Information Technology from University of Pretoria, South Africa. Apart from holding the said academic qualifications, mostly in IT and information management and IT, he has focused his interests for digital archiving in relation to preserving cultural heritage artefacts and information resources. Among others, his research interests have focused on archiving historical, political, and anthropological artefacts and other information resources. He has participated in researching on archiving, preserving, and facilitating access to digital resources for effective retrieval of the same. He also has developed courseware on information search and retrieval services for information institutions in Tanzania.

Ms. Levina Mfupe, Junior researcher and administrative

Levina Didas Mfupe holds a Master of Business Management from theUniversity of Dar es Salaam, with focus on librarytechnologies. She has deep interest in digitalization andarchive management. Since 2013 she is involved indifferent successful UDSM digitization projects as teammember and team leader, such as Digitization of UDSMdissertations abstracts, Tanzania newspapers articledatabase, UDSM archive, Mwalimu Nyerere collectionand Fosbrooke collection. She is currently serving ashead of reference section of UDSM library and supervisorof UDSM library digitization activities.Levina also co-founded the online school in Tanzania called Online Open School of Africa(OOSA).

Prof. Salisu Mamman Abdulrahman, Senior researcher

Salisu Mamman Abdulrahman obtained a PhD in Computer Science from MAPi Doctoral Programme in Computer Science of the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto, Portugal with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning. He was offered appointment with the Department of Computer Science, KUST Wudil, Nigeria as Graduate Assistant in 2007 and rose to the rank of Associate Professor (Reader) in 2020. He was the Head of department of Computer Science, KUST, Wudil (2017 -2021) and currently Dean, Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, KUST, Wudil, Nigeria since February 2021. Dr Abdulrahman has several publications in peer review journals and conferences and is a reviewer to two Springer Journals.

Dr. Alhassan Adamu, Senior researcher

Dr Alhassan Adamu was born in Kofa Bebeji LocalGovernment Area of Kano State on 11th April 1984. He graduated from the Department of Computer Science KUST, Wudil in 2007. He Obtained an MSc in Computer Science specialized in the Software Engineering from University Putra Malaysia (2013) and a PhD in Computer Science from Universiti Sains Malaysia with a specialization in Value-Based Software Engineering. Dr Alhassan Adamu was offered appointment with the Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil in 2010 as Computer Programmer, later moved to Department of Computer Science as Assistant Lecturer in 2013 and rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer. Dr Alhassan was the Deputy Director of MIS KUST, Wudil from 2013 to 2014, Deputy Director Center for Information and Communication Technology, KUST Wudil from 2017 to 2018 and is currently the Director Management Information System (MIS), KUST, Wudil since 2019. Dr Alhassan was member of selection board in the 2018/2019 PTDF Local Scholarship Scheme (LSS) Postgraduate Interviews, Jamb Chief Technical Adviser for Jigawa state (2022). Dr. Alhassan has several publications in peer review journals and conferences.

Dr. Yusuf Isma' ila, Senior researcher

Yusuf Isma’ila, BScn in Political Science from the University of Abuja, MSc in Political Science from Kano and PhD in International Studies at Universiti Utara, Malaysia is a Senior lecturer from the School of General Studies, Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil. He was Visiting Senior Lecturer at Sule Lamido University on History of Europe, A-Qalam, University on Islamic Political Thought and Constitutional Development in Nigeria. He teaches Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Nigerian Politics and Economics, History of Nigerian People and Culture. He supervised several MSc projects.

Dr. Abdulmalik Ahmad Lawan, Junior researcher

Abdulmalik Ahmad Lawan is a Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Nigeria. He obtained M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Information Systems at Near East University (NEU), Cyprus. His first degree was in Computer Science at KUST. His research interests lie in the area of Human-Computer Interactions, Educational and Emerging Technologies, and eHealth among others.

Prof. Pia Ulvenblad, Senior researcher

Pia Ulvenblad is Associate professor in Business Administration at Högskolan in Halmstad, Halmstad, Sweden. Her research interest focuses Sustainable Business Models, Leadership/Self-leadership, Entrepreneurship and Social innovation. She leads research and development projects in the food and forest industry as well as entrepreneurial organizations. She is also the vice chairperson in WiTEC (Women in TEChnology) where she works for gender inclusion in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) related organizations.

Prof. Per-Ola Ulvenblad, Senior researcher

Per-Ola Ulvenblad conducts research regarding business models, innovation and sustainability in the agricultural sector, safety in the forest sector as well as regarding banks’ financing of SMEs. He holds a PhLic in Business Administration and a LL.M. from Lund University and works at the School of Business, Innovation and Sustainability at Halmstad University, where he is head of department of Business and responsible for the master’s program in Auditing and Banking. Previously, he has been dean of the School of Business and Engineering at Halmstad University for thirteen years. Before joining the university, he worked as a bank lawyer.

Dr. Ghazal Zalkat, Junior researcher

She is PhD candidate at the School of Business, Sustainability and Innovation at the Halmstad University. She was responsible for research activities for several projects: PLOUTOS, Consulting EUth, SustainIT. MA in horticulture at the University of Damascus, she was researcher in agricultural economics at the General Commission for Scientific Agriculture Research in Syria.

Prof. Elias Phaahla, Senior researcher

Elias Phaahla is an Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Johannesburg where he specialises in comparative politics and the politics of social transfers with specific focus placed on the welfare regimes of South Africa and Mauritius. Of particular interest regarding the welfare regimes is the intersection between developmental state ideals and the welfare consensus defining Mauritius and South Africa’s pensions-focused pro-poor policies and the tightrope often walked by states in the Global South as they pursue growth-focused economic policies against those of egalitarian orientation. His forthcoming book, Social Forces and Divergent Welfare Paradigms in the Global South: The Case of South Africa and Mauritius, explores the historical antecedents shaping modern-day welfare paradigms of the two countries with the role of social forces placed at the centre of discussions. He is also working on research assessing the impact of Covid-19 on pro-poor policies of economies in distress with South Africa and Mauritius serving as case studies.

Dr. Margaret Monyani, Junior researcher

Dr. Monyani, PhD in International Relations, University of Witwatersrand, is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Johannesburg. She worked on research projects for Malaika Foundation, Rift Valley Institute, and Oxford University. She is Board chair of Transforming Young Stars of Africa (TYSA) since December 2017, mainly charged with policy formulation, resource mobilisation and oversight of the executive.

Dr. Ayabulela Dlakavu, Junior researcher

MA and PhD in Political Science, is now a Lecturer and Research Fellow on International Political Economy at the University of Johannesburg.

Dr. Emellin de Oliveira, Senior researcher and Project Manager

Emellin de Oliveira is a Researcher at CEDIS, Co-Coordinator of the Postgraduate Programme in Immigration and Nationality Law at NOVA School of Law/Jurisnova, Guest Lecturer at the University of Coimbra and PhD Candidate at NOVA School of Law. Senior Lawyer at FiO Legal, her legal practice is centred on immigration, asylum and human rights law. She is an expert on intra-EU mobility (MoveS) and is on the EUAA list of experts. Co-founder of the NOVA Asylum Policy Lab, she coordinates research on migration, asylum, databases, security and human rights.

 

Daniela Antão, Junior Researcher

Daniela Antão is a legal scholar and practitioner specializing in economic regulation and competition law, with extensive experience in regulated sectors such as ICT and digital markets. She has advised private entities on market design, infrastructure regulation, and consumer protection.

She holds a law degree and a postgraduate qualification from King’s College London, and has also completed an MBA at NOVA School of Business and Economics, which informs her interdisciplinary perspective and strong interest in Law & Economics. Her research lies at the intersection of private law, economic regulation, and digital governance, exploring how law can address power asymmetries, protect the neural integrity of users of digital services, and address other systemic risks in the digital economy.

Daniela is currently a research scholarship holder at the Knowledge Centre WhatNext.Law, a partnership between NOVA School of Law and Vieira de Almeida, where she works on forward-looking regulatory frameworks for emerging technologies and markets. She was recently awarded a bioethics prize for her work on users’ neuro manipulation by digital services, reflecting her commitment to integrating human rights and ethical perspectives into regulatory design and private law research. She also collaborates on academic and executive education programmes and regularly contributes to interdisciplinary projects and policy debates on competition, regulation, and digital transformation.

Dr. Maria João Carapêto, Senior researcher and Project Manager

Maria João Carapêto, a Ph.D. candidate at Nova School of Law, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, researches International Cooperation for Development in Africa-EU Relations and its impact on reshaping international law paradigms. With over a decade of experience in project and programmemanagement, consultancy, and international relations, she has led initiatives fostering sustainable development and international cooperation involving African countries. Certified project manager (IPMA Level C) and a certified development project manager (CDPM II).

Bárbara Sacramento, Junior Researcher

Bárbara Sacramento is a Master’s student in International and European Law, currently drafting her dissertation in European Union law on the preliminary ruling mechanism and the institutional dialogue established between national courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). 

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, which supports an interdisciplinary perspective on EU governance, multilateralism and international policy.  In parallel with her academic work, Bárbara works as a consultant in artificial intelligence, advising on legal and compliance dimensions of emerging technologies. She is also affiliated with SPARC, a research centre dedicated to international space law, where she engages with research at the intersection of international legal frameworks, technology, and strategic domains.

Dr. Ariana Paraíso, Junior researcher

PhD Candidate at NOVA School of Law, where she completed her Master’s in Law and Security. She holds a PhD fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and is a researcher at CEDIS – R&D Centre on Law and Society. She was Project Manager of the Intra-Africa Pax Lusófona and part of the Executive Coordination of the Master’s in Public Law and Sustainable Development at the University of São Tomé and Príncipe. An internal security auditor and member of AEQUALITAS: Justice, Democracy and Citizenship without Borders, she holds a Law degree from the University of Lisbon and was a researcher at the NOVA Refugee Clinic (2020–2023).

Matilde Pina Silva, Junior Researcher

Matilde Pina Silva is  currently pursuing an MA in European International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe in Belgium as part of the Victoria Amelina Promotion. She holds a BA in Political Science and International Relations and a Master in Law with a specialization in International and European Law from NOVA University Lisbon. Her academic background is further complemented by a postgraduate degree in Humanitarian Law and Conflicts from the University of Coimbra and the Military University Institute of Portugal. She has been actively involved in multiple Model United Nations conferences and Moot Court competitions as a participant, coach, and judge.

 

José Tomás Simeão, Junior Researcher

José Tomás Simeão is a PhD candidate at NOVA School of Law (NOVA University Lisbon), specialising in International Law. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations (2021) and a Master’s degree in International and European Law (2023), both from NOVA University Lisbon. He is a member of CEDIS – Research & Development Center on Law and Society. His research focuses on polemology (the study of war), peace and conflict studies, and the use of force in public international law.

Prof. Stephane Lhuillery, Senior researcher

Stephane Lhuillery is Full Professor at NEOMA Business School. He graduated from the Ecole NormaleSuperieure de Paris Saclay, received his PhD from the University of Sorbonne Paris Nord, and occupied went on to occupy several permanent positions at the University of Sorbonne Paris Nord, EPFL, ICN Business School. His research deals with the determinants of innovation with a focus on open innovation, and more recently, on green innovations. He is also regularly involved in the evaluation of innovation policies. His articles have been published in such journals as Research Policy, Industrial and Corporate Change, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, and Health Economics. Stephane is a member of the scientific committee of the open access journal M@n@gement.

Prof. Haithem Marzouki, Senior researcher

Haithem Marzouki is a professor of Finance and the Director of Innovative Pedagogy. Haithem teaches corporate finance, financial engineering, corporate restructuring, and financial products. As director of innovative pedagogy, he is responsible for the dissemination of best practices and innovative teaching strategies within the faculty (adaptive learning, active learning, deep learning, hybrid learning, etc.), the use of technology in and outside the classroom, course design, the development of digital learning and the provision of faculty development program based on trainings, seminars, workshops and webinars.
